To the east
of Fishhausen (modern Primorsk) along the bay lies the Horse Swamp.
It is a mysterious and macabre place full of
supernatural forces. It is considered to be one of those places where the
influence of old Prussian gods still exists. It was called the Horse Swamp due
to the great amount of tales united with one idea- somewhere in the swamp a werewolf is found. The werewolf appears in
the image of a horse. He can fulfill any desire but only in case that a man
would be able to capture him.
One peasant
from Bludau (modern Kostrovo) had an unfortunate period in his life: his wife
was ill and the harvest didn’t turn out well. He was so downcasted and
dispirited that he told alound: “If I had this magic horse, I would cope with
all the troubles”. And the werewolf appeared immediately in front of him. The
peasant crept to the horse, threw a rope on his neck and dragged him to the
barn. The werewolf didn’t resist, but
when the peasant gave him some hay, he refused to eat. He behaved the same for
the next eight days, and on the ninth day the barn went up in flames. The fire
was noticed in time and it was extinguished. However, no traces of the horse
were found in the barn. Perhaps, people
are right when they affirm a lot of ghosts and evil spirits to be dwelled in
the Horse Swamp as it is wild and deserted place which terrorizes inhabitants.
